Embracing “the greatest challenge”

with one comment

Continuing with our environmentalist theme, the latest idea to take hold is Earth Hour. Beginning in Sydney last year, it is going global in 2008. Dublin City Council has already agreed to support the initiative.

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

According to Dublin’s Lord Mayor,

“This campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to Government has a duty to do what they can against global warming. It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action.

It appears that voting a motion of support will be the full extent of Dublin City Council’s activities with regard to this event, so Dubliners should remain fully free to choose whether or not they wish to take part. Those who don’t buy into “the greatest challenge ever faced” can leave their candles in the cupboard.

  1. Global warming may indeed be real, but i do not think that it will be a problem. Peak oil will hit us long before any serious effects are felt, and then, whether we like it or not, CO2 emissions will not be a problem.
